What is Colposcopy?
Colposcopy is a special test in which is done if your Pap smear is abnormal. Colposcope is a special instrument which helps to examine the cervix and vagina for abnormal cells which may be turn into cancer. It’s a painless procedure which is recommended when abnormal cells are seen in Pap smear.
What happens during Colposcopy:
In colposcopy the cervix is examined with a microscope with green filter and white filter and any abnormal looking areas are analysed. Biopsy is taken from suspicious areas.
Is colposcopy painful:
Colposcopy is a quite painless process
Colposcopy can be used to diagnose:
- Genital warts
- Inflammation of the cervix (cervicitis)
- Precancerous changes in the tissue of the cervix
- Precancerous changes in the tissue of the vagina
- Precancerous changes of the vulva
Risks
Colposcopy is a safe procedure that carries very few risks. Rarely, complications from biopsies taken during colposcopy can occur, including:
- Heavy bleeding
- Infection
- Pelvic pain
Why is colposcopy done?
1. Pap smear is abnormal.
2. Pelvic examination is abnormal
3. Tests show HPV infection
4. Any abnormal bleeding or discharge
When can I go to work following colposcopy?
Colposcopy is a non invasive procedure. You can return to work soon after the procedure.
