Pregnancy is a beautiful phase in every woman’s life. With the news of pregnancy comes advises from friends and family, excitement and also anxiety. It’s also a difficult time where you feel the effects of hormones leading to variety of symptoms. It’s a phase when the baby grows most rapidly. By 6 weeks the heartbeat is seen and by the end of first trimester that is first 3 months most of body organs are formed.
Common symptoms experienced in pregnancy are morning sickness, loss of appetite, giddiness, heaviness, excessive acidity, mood swings, tiredness and sleeplessness. These are due to body’s reaction to the high levels of hormones. Morning sickness is usually present and one of the earliest symptoms of pregnancy. Only in a few women vomiting becomes excessive and becomes a matter of concern. Ladies are concerned about loss of appetite and vomiting. “ Will it affect the baby “ is a common question.
Generally in most women morning sickness doesn’t affect the baby. Women are advised to take small feeds at regular intervals and also take foods which can be tolerated. Also to drink sufficient fluids to prevent dehydration. Usually morning sickness passes off by 12 weeks. After that a balanced diet can be taken.
It’s also time for first antenatal check up. In the first check up detailed history is taken especially previous pregnancy details, history of medications, immunisation history, medical disorders, allergies etc. It’s important to avoid over the counter medications during pregnancy and inform your doctor if taken. The first scan is done for confirmation of pregnancy, ruling out ectopic pregnancy, check if gestational age correlates with dates, and also viability. Any risk factors that can adversely affect pregnancy are noted. Folic acid supplementation is started.
Some common dos and don’ts
- Travelling is best avoided. When necessary take safety precautions.
- Exercise only after consulting your doctor.
- Avoid medications without prescription.
- Avoid Alcohol, tobacco, pesticides, excessive coffee and tea.
- Eat healthy hygienic food rich in protein, calcium and iron at regular intervals.
- Eat plenty of vegetables and fresh fruits. Avoid junk foods.
- Raw papaya and raw pineapple should be avoided.
- Avoid radiation exposure eg x rays
- Get adequate rest
- Track your weight. It should be steady.
- Drink sufficient water. At least 8 glasses per day.
- Avoid sauna or steam room.
- Take prescribed medications at correct time and consult your obstetrician regularly.
