It’s a common question asked to me by my patients. Is it safe to travel by air in pregnancy? My suggestion would be if it’s avoidable it’s better to avoid any travelling during pregnancy. Also it’s better to plan travelling during second trimester. However air travel can be allowed up to 36 weeks of pregnancy provided you don’t have any complications. You should always consult your doctor before planning any type of travel during pregnancy.
Your doctor might caution against air travel if you’re experiencing pregnancy complications that might be worsened by air travel or require emergency care. The duration of the flight also should be considered. Most airlines require you to carry a fit to fly certificate from your doctor and a recent ultrasound report.
When you fly:
- Check the airline’s policy. Guidelines for pregnant women might vary by carrier and destination.
- Buckle up. During the trip, fasten the lap belt under your abdomen.
- Promote circulation. Take occasional walks up and down the aisle. If you must remain seated, flex and extend your ankles periodically. Also, avoid wearing tightfitting clothing. Use of compression stockings might help.
- Drink plenty of fluids. Low humidity in the cabin can lead to dehydration.
- Avoid gassy foods and drinks preflight. Entrapped gases expand at altitude, which can cause discomfort. Examples include potatoes, chickpeas and carbonated drinks.
- Make a medical plan. For obstetric care during your trip if need arises .
